Sometimes, when I’ve just finished an incredible book or watched a mind-blowing movie, I sit and wonder at how people can be inspired to write such rich, wonderful worlds.
Inspiration can be a hard thing to come by – and not just for writers!
I do believe that everyone has a story in them – whether it’s based on their own life, or completely fictional, there’s a story waiting to be told. Finding it, however, can be the hard part.
Personally, I’ve never had a problem coming up with stories. What inspires me? It can be anything. I’ve been inspired by the lyrics to Radiohead’s Paranoid Android (stay tuned for that story). I’ve been inspired by other authors and their stories. An image, a song, a movie, something I see on the street, something my dad says one night… for me the inspiration comes from everywhere and I guess I’m lucky in that way.
I’m writing all my ideas down – most are just one or two lines – an inkling of a story that wants to be told, eventually. Relic started out in a similar way. I don’t even remember where I got the original idea from, or when, or why… but I remember it sitting in the back of my mind for years whispering ‘write me, write me’… and I am so glad I finally did!
It’s common knowledge that writers write from their own life experience – we have to! What we’ve experienced often bleeds onto the page. The good, the bad, the funny. Our friends will read the stories we write and see a memory of their own, one they shared with the author – their friend – and laugh.
Of course, there are things we can’t experience for ourselves. I am not living in a fantasy medieval world. There is no magic (sad). But that is why we write, isn’t it? So we can experience these worlds – real or not – for ourselves.
If you are a writer – or want to be – I urge you to keep going. Keep writing. Keep exploring. Because, trust me, there will be someone out there who wants to be part of the world you’ve created and who will fall in love with it just as much as you have.
