Book review – The Potion Diaries by Amy Alward

The second I read that the Princess of Nova accidentally poisons herself with a love potion and falls in love with her own reflection, I burst out laughing. It was then I knew I had to read Amy Alward’s The Potion Diaries. I know I’m a little behind on this one, seeing as Zoella herself has already praised this awesome book, but this is definitely one of those stories that will always be perfect for anyone looking for a bit of fun and adventure.

the-potion-diariesSam is our heroine and what a girl she is! Her knowledge of potions and determination to restore her family’s reputation label her a powerhouse character in my eyes. Smart, witty, kind, driven. No wonder the King’s evil sister sets out to sabotage her in this Hunger Games-esk competition.

Not to mention her dashing competitor-slash-frenemy Zain Aster. Hello, love interest! As much as Sam tries to deny it, the reader knows that she won’t be able to resist for long (since yours truly wasn’t able to).

The scenes with Princess Nova obsessing over her ‘one true love’ were hysterical at times and disturbing at others. She might have been a fool in love who messed up an illegal potion (karma?), but Princess Nova is never treated as such. In fact, everyone in the castle is afraid of what she might do to be with ‘the one’. Uh oh.

Sam may be the potions expert but author Amy Alward is an expert in adventure!
